A fun and tasty experience
Himmel’s is one of the last remaining pieces of authentic German fun in the once thriving German Lincoln Square neighborhood of Chicago, and after a fun filled day at the restaurant, I can only hope it sticks around for a while. I attended a special event with a buffet featuring some of Himmel’s best: Schnitzel, Pork Shank, Spätzle, Sausage, Sauerkraut, Potato Salad and more. And lets not forget the AMAZING Pretzel Bread baked fresh right on site!!!
As more German restaurants seem to be cutting back on the quality and authenticity of their food, Himmel’s food didn’t show any signs of cutbacks. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, though there weren’t too many unexpected twists on the traditional taste. I’m not a big fan of sauerkraut, yet on this plate every last bit was eaten. Same with the potato salad… yum.
The overall atmosphere of Himmel’s was great. Despite its small and packed atmosphere, there was no problem partying with live music and dancing. Himmel’s was filled to capacity when I went and the wait staff was friendly and attentive the entire time. They genuinely looked like they were enjoying their job, which translated to some good service.
Bottom line: I’ll be going back
